Yoga & Hiking in Molde, Norway

Molde is a city and municipality in Romsdal, in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is a small town by the Moldefjord with a population of 26822. Molde is a very calm and relaxing city, famous for its amazing views. It is surrounded by fjords and close to several remarkable hiking trails and viewpoints. Book your flight to Molde, Årø airport.

The arrival day for the retreat is Monday.  We will pick you up from the Molde airport during the day, but it is best to arrive with the 16.45 or 17.00 flight from Oslo.  It is not a problem when you arrive earlier on that day or with a buss. Transfer from the airport or bus station is included in the price. On Monday, we have a welcome dinner all together at 18.00.

The retreat days will start with walking or driving to the local yoga studio for the morning yoga and pranayama. The walk is around 10 minutes from Thon Hotel or 5-20 minutes from your accommodation. If your accommodation is not so close, you will be together with 4 other people and have a car to drive to the yoga studio. Don't worry if you don't drive, you will be accommodated together with someone who does. We use rental cars that have an insurance included. The rental car fee is included in the price.

AccommodationYou can choose between a hotel room or a single or double bedroom in an apartment together with other retreat participants. The hotel is located in the city center and the comfortable but simple rooms include a private bathroom, shower, toiletries, and free wireless internet. You can choose between a single or a double room. The hotel name is Thon Hotel Moldefjord, address Storgata 40, Molde. If you want more privacy and time alone we strongly recommend you to choose to stay at the hotel. If you prefer a more luxurious room, please let us know. 

Accommodation in an apartment is a local home, guest house or camping place. You will share the bathroom together with 4 other participants. Those accommodations are located in different parts of the city.

Yoga is for everyone. You do not need to be very experienced in it, but if you are, good for you! The morning yoga will be a traditional Hatha yoga class. I always give you easy options and more advanced ones. The pace of the class depends on the group level. There are almost always some beginners and some more experienced practitioners together on the retreat and it is a good thing since then we can learn from each other. Morning yoga class is usually 75 minutes with pranayama and relaxation. 


After the morning yoga class, you will walk or drive to the accommodation, where you will eat breakfast.  We prepare breakfast all together and clean after. Some food will be prepared by our chefs, like overnight oats with different berries and nuts or seeds; pesto and hummus. You will have tea, coffee, bread, eggs, traditional Norwegian fish, cheese, peanut butter, jam, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, fruits, natural yogurt, and milk. If you live in a hotel, they have a very nice continental breakfast buffet available. You will also make your own lunch to take with you to the mountains. It can be a sandwich, salad, fruits or leftovers from last night's dinner. We provide boxes to take food with you.


After breakfast, we will walk or drive to the starting point of the hikes. Sometimes it is close by but for some hikes it can be up to 45 minutes to drive to the starting point (e.g. to have a view over the famous Atlantic Road). Hiking in Norway can be different from some other countries.  The definition of hiking is a long, vigorous walk, usually on trails, in the countryside. So, it is not walking in the park or on flat land. It is walking uphills and downhills on different terrain. In Norway, it can be forest, grass or stones, usually a combination of all three. Sometimes you have to use your hands to help yourself. We will have hikes 3-5 km one way. The elevation is 480 m.a.s.l. until 650 m.a.s.l.  The difficulty level of the hikes is moderate. We will start with an easier and shorter hike on Tuesday. You have to be moderately fit to participate, it is recommended that you train or move regularly. However, we are walking fairly slowly and taking breaks on the way. The purpose is to enjoy the journey, not to hurry up and down. Walking slowly can give you experience of a meditation walk. One of the purposes of hiking is to enjoy the stunning views over the fjords and mountains of Norway. They make you speechless. Silent is the best companion to sit on the top of the mountain and eat your lunch. Or you may want to take a lot of beautiful photos. Usually, people say that although the hike may not be easy, it is worth it! 


The sunrise hike has been a popular option among our hiking yogis and yoginis. If the weather allows, we will walk up to see the amazing sunrise over the mountains. Words can hardly describe the simple, profound and breathtaking magic of watching the sun emerge from the horizon in the stillness of the early morning. 


After hiking we are walking or driving to the yoga studio again to stretch and relax. A  combination of yin and restorative yoga or one of them will help to recover your muscles for the next day. 


Dinners are made by our chef, using local vegetables and/or fresh Norwegian seafood. Dinners consist of delicious and fresh seafood bought from local fisherman, vegetables and healthy desserts like banana bread, fruit salads, raw chocolate or bliss balls. You can treat yourself with freshly squeezed juices and raw chocolate that will be made together on spot. During or after dinner we will have some discussions about the essence of yoga and eight limbs of yoga.


The weather in Norway may change rapidly. If it is raining heavily there is an option to spend a day in a local water park Moldebadet, visit the museum or have a raw chocolate workshop.


Please be aware that it is a very active holiday. If you need a more relaxing holiday, you are still welcome to participate, but we strongly recommend you to skip some hiking trips and yoga classes. To walk in the mountains every day for 5 days is physically demanding, even if we are walking slowly and only around 500 m.a.s.l. If you have some injuries or knee problems, please take your walking sticks with you. The most important things are good walking shoes, a positive mind and the ability to listen to your own body.

The leaving day is Sunday. In the morning we have a yoga class and breakfast altogether. Then you have time to pack, take the walk in the city and say goodbye to your new friends. Transfer to the airport on Sunday is between 12 pm-19. If you leave on your own, taxi to the airport costs around 250 nok.
